As part of the EA Strategic Plan 2010-2015 set out in support of EA’s development and increasing cooperation with the European Commission, it was announced at the last EA General Assembly held on 27-28 May 2014 in Prague, Czech Republic, that the EA Executive Committee has appointed Andreas Steinhorst as the first EA Executive Secretary.
From DACH and DAkkS…
Further to a PhD with Scholarship from the Fund of the Chemical Industry, Andreas Steinhorst started his career in the field of accreditation in 1995 as the managing director of the German Accreditation body of Chemistry (DACH). He led DACH to a recognized accreditation body and signatory of the EA MLA.
He was the Head of the Central Services and subsequently Managing Director of the Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH (DAkkS), the German national accreditation body established in late 2009 in accordance with Regulation (EC) 765/2008.
These positions have made Andreas Steinhorst acquire extensive experience and knowledge in the
areas of human resources and organization, budget and finances, controlling as well as internal
services and procurement. Cooperation with regulators has also been one of his tasks: he has been
involved – inter alia – in the legislative procedures leading to the German regulation for emission
trading and the implementing regulation to the law for energy and electricity tax.
Moreover Andreas Steinhorst has represented DAkkS (previously DACH) in many various committees
of EA, ILAC and IAF, including their General Assemblies. He notably chaired the EA Health Care
Working Group Laboratory Medicine from 2004 to 2009, and was the Vice-Chair of the EA Laboratory
Committee from 2005 to 2009. He was also a member of the ILAC Executive Committee as the Chair
of the ILAC Arrangement Management Committee. Through all these responsibilities, he has been
gaining a deep expertise of the European and global accreditation infrastructures.

Andreas Steinhorst has taken his new office on 1 June 2014.
His responsibilities consist among others in:
– liaison (activities) with the EC/EFTA, regions, ILAC, IAF and Recognized Stakeholders;
– management of the Association;
– management of projects;
– monitoring of the peer-evaluation process.
An efficient communication at different levels will be fundamental to the success of any projects and work, notably with:
– EA (Members, Executive, MAC, Committees);
– stakeholders, e.g. European Commission and EFTA, EA Advisory Board, European industry, CABs and their customers, professional associations;
– ILAC, IAF;
– the EA Secretariat team in Paris.
