Main outcome from the survey on the number of CABs accredited within EA by end of 2014
In 2014, the total numbers of all of the 3 main types of accredited conformity assessment bodies progressed, with the biggest increase registered by accredited inspection bodies (+ 9.5%).
This global increase is also supported by the 7% increase registered by the total number of accredited laboratories and the 3.5% increase in the total number of accredited certification bodies.
The most striking trends in 2014 are:
- the biggest progression (+ 13.5%) still recorded by the number of accredited medical laboratories, whose rise has been however decelerating since last year (+ 20%);
- the pushing up (+ 8%) in the number of bodies providing accredited product certification.
The breakdown of the 3 main accreditation types keeps the same outline as in 2013: laboratories still represent the major part with 72% of accreditation activities; inspection still gets the second place, covering a slightly increasing 17% of accreditation activities; 11% of them are related to certification services.
Specific tendency for each type of accredited conformity assessment bodies
The laboratory-related accreditation activities progressed by 7%, thus stabilizing the last 2 year’s rise (+ 5% and 6%). The hugest increase is recorded by the number of accredited medical laboratories (+ 13.5%). The number of accredited calibration laboratories rose by 10%, thus stabilizing the increase registered last year. The number of accredited testing laboratories increased by 5.5%, this rise reaching 2 points more than in 2013.
After the 8% fall in 2013, the number of accredited inspection bodies changed course to rise significantly by 10% after successive annual decreases.
The slight increase in the total number of accredited certification bodies (+ 3.5%) certainly results from the rise in the number of accredited product certification (+ 8%). The numbers of both accredited management system and product certification bodies are more or less the same as last year.
Certainly as a result of the further implementation of Commission Regulation (EU) No 600/2012, the number of GHG verification bodies accredited under EN ISO 14065 (EU ETS) still increased in 2014 to reach 144 (57 accredited bodies in 2012; 111 in 2013).
As far as EA Full Members are concerned:
- accreditation of EMAS verification activities concerned about 85 bodies in 2014, against 130 bodies in 2013, i.e. a 35% decrease;
- the numbers of both proficiency testing providers (PTP) and reference material providers (RMP) registered a 20% increase in 2014: 143 PTPs and 36 RMPs were accredited in 2014 amongst EA Full Members. Although PTP and RMP have been covered by the EA MLA (Level 2) since November 2012, the first peer-evaluation activities for PTP only will be starting in 2016.
No accreditation for EU ETS, EMAS, PTP and RMP activities was reported by EA Associate Members.
The EA Secretariat is most grateful for the cooperation of those accreditation bodies that have kindly participated in this survey. A survey will be carried out in early 2016 to follow up the updated figures for 2015.
